Some previously unpublished photographs are included. Posted 15 April Notes on the Beginnings of Concertina Playing in Ireland, — by Dan Worrall Although the Irish are known for their long folk memory, the story of how of concertina playing began there has been largely lost; it is often tagged to a threadbare tale of mariners bringing them up the Shannon estuary to Clare.
This paper reconstructs its history by using period accounts from newspapers, books and family histories to document the social gatherings where it was played, and the vendors who sold it. The Anglo-German concertina was enormously popular all across Ireland during its heyday, amongst people of nearly all social and economic groups. Its later concentration in Clare was not a result of how it arrived, but of local cultural and economic factors that aided its barest survival there while it was completely dropped—and all but forgotten—elsewhere in the country.

Breathing Colour is an installation-based show that takes a deeper look at the way colour behaves, exploring shapes, materials, shadows and reflections. How does the light during the day influence the colours and materials? What is the relationship between form and colour? When does a colour lift up a shape and give it a new dimension? What is the role of shadow? All elemental aspects of design. The ultimate aim is to pit the power of colour against the power of form.
In my work I think about how coloured objects affect other objects and how all the objects behave in a certain setting. How important is size or volume for a colour and how do coloured objects influence one another? The different materials have an impact on each other and certain colours can accentuate horizontal shapes, while others are better for vertical forms. And then the lighting conditions or colour temperature also changes a space. There are many facets that require research beyond these questions, because the relationship between colour and shape is a puzzle with many solutions.
What makes a colour beautiful? Colour touches on so many different aspects of design:

Posted on 9 January, by Nick Bullock Tides, my second book is due to be published by Vertebrate Publishing and on the shelves in May. The cover is an ink by Tessa Lyons which I think is wonderful. Tessa did such a great job, as everyone at Vertebrate Publishing have done and who are, of course, still doing. My initial draft was words, the final draft is approximately 95 words which means there are a load of prose not included.
So on a run-up to Tides being published, I thought I publish some out-takes here as a bit of a teaser. This number 1 is a mish-mash of an essay I wrote that was first published in the CC journal and some of it was also published in Echoes.

Posted 15 November The Victorian Concertina: These decisions become especially critical for those who would perform the music in a manner that may at least approximate the way it may have sounded in the nineteenth century. Briefly, there are three basic decisions to be made. The first two concern the choice of instrument: The third decision, on the other hand, has to do with a fundamental question of playing technique: After the revival of interest in traditional music and in concertinas from the s the Anglo has once again had some popularity in the United States, but without connection to any tradition of its earlier widespread use in America.
